Folio (377 x 294 mm). 27 hand-colored engraved plates. Contemporary half roan and marbled boards. Some covers detached, joints cracked and spines chipped, in need of re-binding, heavy offsetting from plates throughout, some heavy foxing and browning. FIRST EDITION, containing the first published bird engraving after a drawing by John James Audubon (the female Great Crow-Blackbird on plate 4). Audubon is described in the text as 'that zealous observer of nature and skilful artist.' Bonaparte's continuation of Wilson's American Ornithology was originally intended to be published in three volumes between 1825 and 1828. The fourth volume was only published some five years later, in 1833. The remaining plates were after drawings by Titian Ramsay Peale and Alexander Rider.
