EDWARDS, GEORGE. 1694-1773. A Natural History of Uncommon Birds. London: for the Author, 1739-1751 [but 1802-1805]. WITH: Gleanings of Natural History. London: for the Author, 1758-1764. Together, 7 volumes. 4to (280 x 228 mm). Parallel text in English and French (including title pages), engraved vignettes on volume I title pages, 362 hand-colored engraved plates. Uniform contemporary straight-grained red morocco armorially gilt on upper covers, spines decorated in gilt in 6 compartments, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Rubbed, spines darkened, corners slightly bumped, lacking allegorical frontispiece in first work and portrait of Edwards in second work, offsetting and light spotting throughout. Provenance: Sir Richard Borough, Bart. (1756-1837; armorial stamp on covers); Joseph Grout Williams (of Pendley Manor, Hertfordshire, 1848-1923; bookplates); Field Marshall Alan Francis Brooke, Viscount Alanbrooke (1883-1963; bookplates); Margaret Ralston Gest (1900-1965; her sale, Sotheby Park Bernet, November 1, 1977, lot 39). Second edition, with title pages dated as per the first edition. Edwards's classic images show a variety of birds and other animals with plants and insects native to their habitats. Though two separate titles, the plates are numbered 1 to 210 in the first work, and 211 to 362 in the second work, making them '... considered as one and either must rank as imperfect without the other' (Sitwell Fine Bird Books p 93). This set has watermarks for 1801, and the pagination differs slightly from that given in Anker, including a lack of the advertisement leaf and lists of subscribers.
