DOLLEY MADISON CORRESPONDENCE FROM EBENEZER BREED. BREED, EBENEZER. 1766-1839. Autograph Letter Signed 'Eben: Breed,' to Dolly Madison, regarding shoes sent to her and James Madison, 3 pp recto and verso, folio (conjoining leaves, 302 x 185 mm), Nahant-Lynn, MA, February 22, 1814, small tears with marginal losses at lower edges, with some old tape repairs, browning. Together with 4 copies of a typed transcription of the letter. Written while Madison was president, the letter from Nahant shoemaker Ebenezer Breed details shoes ordered for Dolley Madison by General Stephen R. Bradley. Bradley had in 1808 been responsible for the nomination of James Madison as a Presidential candidate. He remained on friendly terms with the first lady through their Presidency. The shoes were to be delivered to Jon [sic] Dorr, a merchant in Boston, to be forwarded to the White House. He points out that he has included an extra: 'I took the liberty to make and send with [the shoes] a pair of handsome morning slippers for the President.... He asks for payment somewhat deferentially, saying 'This small balance thee can pay to my friend E. Gerry the Vice President to whom I have written and informed and that I also sent a pair of slippers to thy care in the same package exactly like those of the President.' In a post-script, Breed details a change in General Bradley: '... he used to be warm in eulogizing the administration and republican measures, but in his last visit he seemed beside himself and outrageous against the war....'
