GRANT 10-FIGURE CALCULATING MACHINE. Mechanical calculator, Lexington, MA: George Grant, 1890s, steel and brass, painted and partially nickel-plated, with paper numerical labels, scattered patina and wear through nickel plating on handles, paper labels browning. George Grant became interested in developing calculating machines while studying at Harvard in 1869. He patented his first barrel-type calculating machines in 1872 and 1873. He exhibited two calculators at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, one of which was an enormous difference engine, almost 6 feet long and weighing nearly 2,000 pounds. His production models, however, were more practical in scope. He exhibited his third model production calculator at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. This new 10-Figure Machine was sometimes referred to as Grant's Grasshopper Model due to its leggy appearance. Unfortunately, his calculating machines were not commercially successful, and Grant turned his attention to a completely different interest — botany — after relocating to Pasadena, California in 1900. His collection of botanical specimens became part of the Stanford University herbarium.
