A MODERN DAGUERREOTYPE OF THE MOON SHLAER, ROBERT. The Moon. Half-plate daguerreotype of a full moon, 12.5 x 10 cm (5 x 4 inches), Santa Fe, NM, 1991, plate etched 'The Moon / 1:30 AM, MST, 4/1/91 / Santa Fe, N.M. / (C) 1991 / R. Shlaer 223.' Provenance: Jack Naylor Collection, Guernsey's Auctions, New York, New York, 2007. This 1991, half-plate daguerreotype of a full moon by daguerreotypist Robert Shlaer of Santa Fe, N.M. utilizes 19th century technology to capture the image of the Earth's orbital satellite in the Space Age. Shlaer is one of the major artists in the contemporary resurrection and popular reintroduction of the daguerreotype process into modern photography in the digital age. A theoretical biologist, Shaler began experimenting with the process in 1973 and in 1987 he gave up biology to pursue Daguerreian photography full time. Among his favorite subjects are landscapes, nudes, solar eclipses and the moon.
