APOLLO 14: EDGAR MITCHELL'S 'DISAPPEARING FLAG' 50-star US flag, 4 x 6 inches, printed rayon, upper left quadrant deteriorating. With copy of McCrone Associates, Inc. analysis report on the condition of the flag. Provenance: one of several carried in Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell's PPK on the Apollo XIV mission; presented to the Zaricor Flag Collection in 2009 with the stipulation that research continue on the flag's disintegration. Some years after Mitchell's return, the present flown flag began to deteriorate to the point where it presently remains. Curious as to what was causing the damage—was it caused by something in outer space?--Mitchell gifted the flag to the Zaricor Flag Collection with instructions to investigate. The flag was examined in 2009 by McCrone Associates of Westmont, IL, one of the nation's leading microscopy labs. After examination the lab concluded that this rayon flag has been exposed to a heavy dose of alum salt. Rayon, a fiber manufactured from cellulose, was introduced in the 1920s as a 'faux silk.' It was immediately adopted by the flag industry as it provided the look of a silk banner without the expense. Because it is a cellulose fiber, acetates and weak acids can damage it easily. Alum salt is a form of weak acid that is also a fireproofing agent. After the disastrous Apollo 1 fire of 1967, everything in every part of the Apollo modules was fireproofed, down to the PPKs of each individual astronaut. In the process of fireproofing Mitchell's PPK, the present flag was likely exposed to a little too much alum salt. While nothing happened in the moment, over the years the acid has eaten away at the rayon causing the present damage.
