APOLLO 10: EARTH RISE OVER SMYTH'S SEA Vintage large format black and white photograph, May 21-23, 1969, 16 x 19 3/4 inches (405 x 503 mm), NASA ID: AS10-30-4480. Apollo 10 was the final dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 Moon landing. One of the mission's objectives was to photograph a number of sites on the lunar surface. The current image was taken with the 70mm Hasselblad using black and white film and captures a stunning earth rise over Smyth's Sea (Mare Smythii) on the easternmost edge of the Moon's near side. ''To see our home planet from this point of view was absolutely awesome,' exclaimed Thomas Stafford. 'It was nearly breathtaking. I was reminded of Socrates's saying in 399 B.C., before flight above the ground was theorized: 'A man must rise above the Earth to the top of the atmosphere and beyond, and only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives'' (Jacobs p 53).
