MERCURY 7, ATLAS 6: LAUNCH COUNTDOWN, 'GODSPEED JOHN GLENN' Project Mercury. Mimeographed Manuscript, 103 pp, with 6 additional pp laid in at front, 4to, [Cape Canaveral], December 20, 1961, annotated throughout by H.H. Luetjen, housed in a period cloth 3-ring binder with 'H.H. Luetjen / SEDR 103-13 / Launch Countdown / MA-6' in spine panel, some toning and thumbing to leaves. Hulen H. Luetjen (1925-2016), was a structures engineer at McDonnell Aircraft working on project Mercury, later serving as Chief engineer for the Gemini program and Launch Operations Director for the Skylab program. The present binder is his working copy of the launch protocols prepared by Floyd Powell, originally released December 4 and revised 20 December 1961. Luetjen has annotated this copy throughout in red, blue and orange, each color likely representing a different pass through the launch countdown leading up to the Mercury-Atlas 6 launch date of February 20, 1962. The final launch notes appear in orange pencil from p 95 to the end. Opposite p 104, which ends with the steps 'Mercury is go ... Engine Start / Main Engine Complete / Release,' Leutjen has added on the verso of the previous sheet: 'Godspeed John Glenn.'
