EVANS, and HARRISON SCHMITT, photograph laid down to 38 x 48 cm (15 x 19 inches) mount, some fading to image, spotting and toning to mount, matted and framed to 51 x 41 cm (20 x 16 inches). Provenance: Collection of Joe Garino. Inscribed on the mat by Cernan: 'To Joe Garino—You Travelled Every Mile We Covered / Joe and We Thank You For All The Help / Along The Way—Gene Ron Jack/ Apollo XVII Dec 1972 / Gene Cernan,' also signed 'Ron Evans' and 'Harrison H. Schmitt.' Astronaut Harrison Schmitt took this photo of Cernan's salute with a 70mm Hasselblad camera. After the mission Cernan, Evans and Schmitt signed this photographic print and presented it to Sgt. Joe Garino USAF, the Physical Condition Supervisor for NASA who trained Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts in the gym at NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center. Garino argued that physical conditioning was crucial for peak astronaut performance and successful missions. He also invented space exercise equipment and developed improvements to the space helmets and air masks for the comfort of the astronauts.
