A GLOBE OF THE PLANET MARS BY A FEMALE CARTOGRAPHER BRUN, EMMY INGEBORG. 1872-1929. Mars efter Lowells Glober 1894-1914. Paint and plaster on globe, Diameter: 20 cm (8 inches), circumference 64 cm (25 inches), on brass half-meridian arc mounted on turned ebonized pedestal, 19 cm h (7 ½ inches), printed label to pedestal. Some crazing and wear to surface. Emmy Ingeborg Brun was a self-taught Danish astronomer who, without a telescope or binoculars, was able to create globes of Mars just from reading the works of other scientists. Her Mars globe was inspired by the writings of Percival Lowell who believed that Mars was covered in a series of artificial canals created by its inhabitants, living together in a socialist society without boundaries. Lowell's theories were widely shot down by the scientific community but proved very popular with the general public. Examples of Brun's Mars globe are rare.
