WRIGHT MILITARY FLYER 6 gelatin silver contact prints of the Wright military flyer, [Fort Myer, VA, c. 1909], each 193 x 240 mm; each paired with its 'Kodak 619' negative, 200 x 250 mm; images showing Orville and possibly Wilbur Wright with the plane, as well as detailed views of the plane and its motor. REMARKABLE IMAGES OF THE WORLD'S FIRST MILITARY PLANE. According to the Smithsonian, 'In 1908, the U.S. Army Signal Corps sought competitive bids for a two-seat observation aircraft. Winning designs had to meet a number of specified performance standards. Flight trials with the Wrights' entry began at Fort Myer, Virginia, on September 3, 1908.' The original tests were an overwhelming success, but the demonstrations ended with a crash that injured Wright and killed the military's observer, Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge, making the latter the first fatality in a powered plane. In spite of the disaster, the U.S. Army saw the potential in the Wright Brothers machine, and immediately ordered another one, which was delivered in 1909 and is likely the machine pictured here.
