MARINER 9: GROUP OF 20 MARS PHOTOGRAPHS 20 silver gelatin print photographs, 1972-1973, approximately 8 x 10 inches (204 x 254 mm), with JPL Image Processing Laboratory information along bottom portion, two with photo processing information on sticker aside of image, a few with some cockling, but generally very good. Mariner 9 was the first spacecraft to orbit another planet. It was launched on May 30, 1971 and reached Mars on November 14 that same year, but the main surface imaging began in mid-January the following year. Mariner 9 went on to cover 85% of the surface before it was turned off in October 27, 1972, its supply of attitude control gas depleted. Besides the visual imaging system, the robotic probe also carried an ultraviolet Spectrometer, an Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer, Celestial Mechanics, S-Band Occultation, and an Infrared Radiometer.
