May Guinness R.H.A. (Irish, 1863-1955) Flowers in a jug signed 'M. Guinness' (lower right) pastel 37 x 25 cm. (14 1/2 x 9 7/8 in.) Footnotes: Provenance Norah McGuinness, thence by family descent Private Collection, U.K. Guinness was a member of the Water Colour Society of Ireland from 1892 and exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1897, continuing to show with them until 1911. She spent a period of time painting in Florence from 1902 to 1903, and then working en plein air in Brittany and under Andre Lhote in Paris. While there, she saw the early work of Henri Matisse and the Fauves, which left a lasting impression on Guinness. She, in turn, influenced younger female painters such as Evie Hone, Mainie Jellett and Mary Swanzy. A retrospective was held the year after her death at the Dawson Gallery, Dublin and her work is included in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
