Barrie Cooke (British, 1931-2014) Cell Growth signed, inscribed with title and dated 'Cell Growth 1994/Barrie Cooke' (verso) oil on canvas 50.7 x 55.9 cm. (20 x 22 in.) Footnotes: Provenance The Artist, thence by family descent Private Collection, Ireland Barrie Cooke was born in Cheshire, England in 1924 and moved to Ireland in 1954 first settling in Co. Clare before later moving to Thomastown in Kilkenny with the ceramic artist Sonja Landweer in 1966. A keen outdoorsman and fisherman his semi abstract landscape paintings are concerned with capturing the flux of nature on both a material and philosophical level, and particularly the ecological impact of humankind on the natural environment. His landscape paintings are characterised by loose, thinly painted canvasses with forms and colours bleeding into each other to create expressionistic and dynamic semi-abstract paintings that hint at deeper truths and emotions below surface appearances.
