Nicholas Joseph Crowley (1819-1857) Self-Portrait oil on canvas 91.5 x 71 cm. (36 x 28 in.) Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, Switzerland. Nicholas Joseph Crowley was born in Dublin in 1819 and as a child was considered to be an artistic prodigy. He received his training at the R.D.S. Schools where he won numerous awards and at the Royal Hibernian Academy where he first exhibited in 1829. He next exhibited there in 1832 and continued to do so almost every year for the rest of his life. In 1836 he was a founding member of the Belfast Association of Artists and that same year he was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Hibernian Academy and received honorary membership the following year, becoming the youngest member ever admitted. His debut at the Royal Academy in London was in 1835 and he moved there two years later where he established a very successful practice as a portrait painter. Although based in London he often returned to Dublin and in Ireland was chiefly known for his portraits of Daniel O'Connell produced during his imprisonment in 1844. His self-portrait paintings demonstrate his artistic bravura and evoke the Romanticism of Delacroix.
