Daniel O'Neill (Irish, 1920-1974) One Singer One Song signed 'D O'Neill' (lower right) and inscribed with title 'ONE SINGER - ONE SONG' (verso) oil on board 36 x 46 cm. (14 1/8 x 18 1/8 in.) Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, Canada Sale; Bonhams, 18 November 2009, lot 67, where acquired by the present owner Private Collection, U.K. In 1946 an exhibition of Daniel O'Neill's work was shown at the Victor Waddington Gallery, Dublin, with an impressive twenty-one out of twenty-three pictures sold. His name was made and he was regularly to exhibit and sell his work through the gallery until 1969 (when he met George McClelland, the Belfast dealer who became his new patron).O'Neill was largely self-taught and it was once commented 'We must be grateful that O'Neill got to himself before instruction did. For if it were not so, it is unlikely that Ireland would have produced a painter of such sensual, sensitive, soulful and profound work. He is one of our greatest painters' (see 'A Sense of the Forlorn: Daniel O'Neill', Fortnight, 307, June 1992, p.16).One Singer One Song depicts a trademark interaction between figure and environment. His work is mysterious, haunting, even melancholic at times and the evocative title leaves the viewer wanting to know more. It is this emotional intensity conveyed through colour and form that makes Daniel O'Neill's art so enduringly appealing. We are grateful to Karen Reihill for her assistance in cataloguing this work.
