A rare baluster wine glass, circa 1720-30 With a conical bowl extending into a true baluster stem containing a small tear, terminating in a small basal knop, over a folded domed foot, 15.9cm high Footnotes: Provenance Bayreuth Collection This glass resembles those depicted in a painting of circa 1721 by Sir Godfrey Kneller of two members of the Kit-Cat Club, now hanging in the National Portrait Gallery (inv. no.NPG 3215). Traditionally known as 'Kit-Cat' glasses, recent research has in fact shown that this attribution is spurious and that the glasses shown in the painting are in fact of an earlier type with round funnel bowls and conical feet, see Simon Wain-Hobson, 'The serious misnomer of Kit-Cat glasses', Glass Matters, No.6 (October 2019), pp.9-14. A very similar glass to the present lot was sold by Bonhams as part of the Henry J Mein Collection on 12 November 2014, lot 94. Another is illustrated by L M Bickerton, Eighteenth Century English Drinking Glasses (1986), p.74, no.92.
