Two St James's (Charles Gouyn) seals, circa 1750-59 Modelled as masked characters from the Commedia dell'Arte, the larger depicting Harlequin in his brightly coloured suit, one hand raised to his hat, his slapstick tucked under the other arm, a dalmatian dog at his feet, the mound base inscribed 'TOUJOURS GAY', with silver gilt hanging loop and mount containing a hardstone intaglio with a cupid and inscribed 'IALVME', 3.5cm high including loop, the other figure of a gentleman with a pointed beard modelled standing in striped costume, his long cloak painted with pink flowers to match its lining, with a black hat and sporting a grey pointed beard, the base inscribed 'JE...A VOUS', with gold hanging loop and ropetwist mount, 3cm including loop (2) Footnotes: The second seal probably represents Bagolin from the Italian Comedy. Another seal of Harlequin in the same pose but without the dog by his side is in the Lady Charlotte Schreiber Collection in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession no. 414:318-1885.
