The Red Barn Murder: A rare Staffordshire pearlware model of the Red Barn, circa 1828 The red wooden barn with pierced windows, a thatched roof and tiled lean-to, flanked by two tree trunks, a recumbent cow and two chickens before it, on a shaped grassy base titled 'THE RED BARN NEAR POLSTEAD - BURY ST. EDMUNDS' in black, 17.2cm wide, 15cm high Footnotes: The infamous Red Barn Murder is discussed in detail by Myrna Schkolne, People, Passions, Pastimes, and Pleasures (2006), pp.46-53. In 1826 William Corder, a tenant farmer, began a relationship with Maria Marten. Maria had already given birth to two illegitimate children, one fathered by Thomas, William's older brother. Her third child, fathered by William, was born in 1827 and died shortly afterwards. In May that year William arranged to meet Maria at the Red Barn so that they could travel together to Ipswich to marry, but Maria was never seen again. Her body was later found under the barn, having been shot and stabbed. In 1828 William Corder was convicted of her murder and was sentenced to death by hanging, with his body to be 'dissected and anatomized'. By repute, ten thousand people attended the hanging and the Red Barn itself was visited by more than two hundred thousand people in the six months following the discovery of the body, the visitors literally picking apart the building to obtain souvenirs. Such huge public interest caused the Staffordshire potters to produce a number of Staffordshire models of the Red Barn. An identical group is illustrated by Rosalie Sharp, Ceramics: Ethics & Scandal (2002), p.245. Another was sold by Christie's New York on 21 January 2003, lot 44.
