Robert Burns: A rare pearlware jug, circa 1820-30 Probably Scottish, printed in outline and hand-coloured with the seated and smiling figures of 'TAM O SHANTER & SOUTER JOHNNY', both men with a drink in hand, appropriately flanked by wheat or barley sheaves, a border of blue thistles with ochre leaves below the rim, 11cm high Footnotes: Robert Burns wrote the poem 'Tam o' Shanter' in 1790. Both comic and epic, it tells the tale of a farmer Tam (Tom) and his friend the shoemaker or 'souter' Johnnie. The two men regularly enjoy a drink or two at a tavern in Ayr. One evening on his ride home from the pub after a night of overindulgence, Tam encounters a coven of witches, warlocks and the devil himself.
