A LARGE PAINTING OF THE SUMMER PALACE 19th Century Gouache on paper, composed of six vertical panels, together depicting a bird's eye view of the Summer Palace, framed. 96.5cm (38in) high x 178cm (70in) wide Footnotes: Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價 十九世紀 紙本水粉 頤和園鳥瞰圖 Provenance: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, London 來源: 倫敦古董商 Ben Janssens Oriental Art Published, Exhibited and Illustrated: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, TEFAF 2012, London, 2012, p.124. The summer Palace or Yihe yuan 頤和園 depicted in the present lot was an Imperial garden of the Qing dynasty, covering an expanse of 2.9 square kilometres. In 1749, to celebrate the 60th birthday of his mother, Qianlong Emperor commissioned the extension of the existing body of water to create the Kunming lake and gave Longevity Hill its present-day name. In 1888 the Summer Palace was given its current name, Yihe yuan, and used as a summer resort for Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908). One of the most characteristic buildings of the Summer Palace today is the Marble Boat 石舫 which was initially erected in 1755, burnt in 1860 during the Second Opium War, and restored in 1893. The absence of the Marble Boat in the present lot may indicate that the present lot was produced somewhere between 1860 and 1893. Compare with a related painting of the Summer Palace, Qing dynasty, 18th/19th century, which was sold at Sotheby's London, 7 November 2018, lot 106.
