The colour is achieved through the reduction of a minor quantity of iron used as a colorant in the glaze. Compare the Qingbai box and cover with a similar Qingbai box and cover, Song dynasty, illustrated in Dated Qingbai Wares of the Song and Yuan Dynasties 宋元記年青白瓷, Hong Kong, 1998, p.52, pl.29. See also a related Qingbai flower-form box and cover, Southern Song dynasty, which was sold at Christie's New York, 13 September 2019, lot 1019. Qingbai porcelain incense burners, inspired by the shapes of archaic bronzes, were popular during the Song dynasty (960–1279). These burners typically feature a Ding form, characterized by a rounded body and straight neck. However, Qingbai incense burners with a faceted neck, as seen in the present lot, are very rare. See two related Qingbai incense burners, Yuan dynasty, illustrated in The Complete Works of Chinese Ceramics 中國陶瓷全集, vol.11, Yuan dynasty II, Shanghai, 2000, nos.20 & 21, p.46. See also a related Qingbai tripod incense burner, Song/Yuan dynasty, which was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 1 June 2017, lot 531 (part lot).
