Mahogany and Mahogany Veneer Tall Case Clock possibly New York, early 19th century Eight-day weight-driven movement with striking bell impressed 'C. Ainsworth Ware', mounted behind enamel-painted sheet iron dial with polychrome-painted moon phase dial depicting a romantic scene and a ship at full sail flying red and white striped flag, above hemispheres projecting from top of dial face with seconds dial and calendar wheel, the spandrels decorated with red and gold sunbursts in raised bronze-painted reserves; hood of mahogany and veneered pine and polar, crested by flat top with cornice molding and projecting broken pediment centering a reeded keystone plinth, the tympanum shaped to conform with glazed tablet-frame door recessed on a molded shelf with two free-standing colonnettes at the corners; resting on coved molding overhanging a match-veneered and crossband-inlaid waist section with chamfered front corners flanking a door with cyma-curved crest, over a base with deep ogee molding over a straight case with crossband-veneered panels raised on short bracket feet; includes pendulum, door key, and two weights, 48cm wide, 25cm deep, 223cm high (19in wide, 10in deep, 88in high). Footnotes: Provenance Delaney's Antique Clocks, West Townsend, Massachusetts. A chalk inscription on the door reads 'DE Davis / Cleaned / March 27 1829 / W.B. Wilson / Oct 1836' below a smaller pencil inscription, 'Adolf Yunker / cld Sept 4 1885 / = Octbr 6 1891 / Jan 8 1897'.
