Mahogany Veneer Tall Case Clock David Weatherly (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1779-1851); case attributed to Thomas Ogden (West Chester, Pennsylvania, 1790-1841), c. 1830 Eight day, weight-driven, striking bell movement inside hood enclosed on top with flat beveled panel behind carved broken pediment with triple reeding applied over top of volutes and continuing over returns, thin patera moldings applied to scroll terminals flanking an urn finial surmounting keystone molding at center of matched-veneer mahogany tympanum with chamfered round arch conforming to the glazed dial door below, the mahogany sides inset behind slender tapered columns at front corners and double ogee panels blind-dovetailed to back edges of veneered poplar cornice and base returns, the latter having astragal and quarter round molding that slightly overhangs the deep coved molding at top of waist section; the painted iron dial with aperture in lunette for moon phase wheel above two hemispheres, pierced steel minute and hour hands mounted at center between faint inscription 'David Weatherly / Philadelphia' above two winding arbors, the dial encircled with raised bead border and spandrels painted with gilt peaches; the waist section centering a pendulum door veneered with crotch mahogany inside cross-banded border conforming with shaped crest, the case facade with mitered cross-banding that continues over chamfered front corners, the frieze and base defined by matched crotch veneer bands; the similarly chamfered and veneer-paneled base section raised on turned ball feet; includes winding key, door key, pendulum, and two weights, including finial, 45cm wide, 22cm deep, 233cm high (18 3/4in wide, 9 1/2in deep, 92in high). Literature A similar tall case clock with works by Weatherly and case attributed to Ogden, from the collection of Chester County Historical Society (acc. no. CLX19) is illustrated in Margaret Berwind Schiffer, Furniture and Its Makers of Chester County, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1966), cat. no. 84. In an 1826 advertisement, Ogden promoted his supply of eight-day clocks made by George Baldwin and David Weatherby, 'whose characters are [too] well known as Clock-makers to require any recommendation' (see Schiffer, p. 172-88). Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories excluding Arms & Armour, Coins and Medals, Motor Cars, Motorcycles, Wine & Whisky

28% on the first $50,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $50,000 up to and including $1,000,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $1,000,000 up to and including $6,000,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of $6,000,000.

A 3rd-party bidding platform fee (the "3rd-party bidding platform fee") equal to 4% of THE BID PRICE shall be payable by buyers whose successful bid is submitted via 3rd-party bidding platforms, including Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.

Shipping Notices

Oversized Lots

Please note that all lots marked with a W in the catalog are oversized and subject to additional storage and shipping methods. All additional lots purchased with W lots are considered group lots and will be subject to the same terms as W lots.
