Curly Maple and White Pine Chest on Chest southeastern New Hampshire, late 18th Century In two parts, the upper case with solid pine top dovetailed to single-board maple ends, concealed across front and returns by two layers of cove and ogee molding forming cornice, the front comprised of dado-joined rails and three blind-dovetailed maple drawer blades, the four drawers including one deep top drawer with five false cockbead-molded fronts carved into single tiger maple board, simulating a large center drawer carved in low relief with fan and patera motifs, flanked by two columns of split drawers, all fitted with original hardware, over three full graduated drawers with cockbead-molded maple fronts dovetailed to white pine cases, enclosed at back with three rabbeted horizonal pine boards and at bottom with dovetailed pine board, which is inscribed 'Stained and Varnished / Jan 1882 / Champney' in pencil at proper right front corner; resting on pine top of the lower case and recessed in ogee molding applied to front and returns, the solid maple ends joined with dados and blind dovetails to the front rails and three drawer blades, containing four graduated drawers with cockbead-molded maple fronts dovetailed to white pine cases, enclosed with two rabbeted horizontal pine backboards and with single board at bottom, all recessed in ogee base molding across front and returns, raised on ogee bracket feet with shaped returns and shell-carved pendant molding at center, with significant pieced restoration to all four feet below knees, old stained and varnished surface throughout, 109cm wide, 53cm deep, 193cm high (43 1/2in wide, 21in deep, 76in high).
