Pabst Blue Ribbon Billboard Advertisement Gugler Lithographic Co., Milwaukee, Wisconsin, c. 1962 the well-preserved advertisement in twelve halftone screen-printed sheets retaining strong colors, particularly the brilliant red background, minor toning to edges only noticeable in margins, each paper sheet measures 59 inches tall and 43 inches wide, assembling to a full size of nearly 10 feet tall and 21.5 feet wide. Footnotes: Provenance Unknown, possibly in storage at Gugler Lithographic Co. c.1962-1976, then by descent to a Milwaukee owner. Note Gugler Lithographic Co. was a Milwaukee fixture from 1878 onwards, where it was the primary producer for all of Pabst's advertising materials; at the time, Pabst was the largest brewer in the United States. Gugler lithography and printing was also responsible for the creation of WWII era war bond billboards, a classic lithograph of Abraham Lincon, and the Beatle's White Album cover. The good condition of the advertisement owes to the fact that it was kept away from air and light from 1976-2003, at which point it was unfolded in a high-humidity environment to minimize creasing; it has been stored flat until present. The back the first numbered sheet contains a diagram for assembly of the complete image, along with production information. The full image is titled 'PABST BEER' NOW - NO DIRT ON CAN TOPS' and design number 'DES.P-62'. Each sheet is numbered '1162 PABST X', where x is the number of the panel in the overall design. Based on the numbering scheme and on the evolution of can design over the 1960s and 70s, we believe that the production year of this advertisement is very likely to be 1962.
