Fine Carved and Veneered Mahogany Sideboard possibly Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1812 Tiered 'stage-' or 'caddy-top' sideboard with mahogany top shaped to conform with carved and punch-decorated half- and quarter-engaged columns, recessed in a paneled semi-circle at the center and flanked by two drawers with cockbead-molded and mahogany-veneered fronts dovetailed to cases of mahogany and white pine, resting on a deeper mahogany top with conforming shaped edges above engaged acanthus-carved and reeded posts that continue to six thick tapered and reeded legs on ball feet, containing one row of five drawers above an arched skirt with match-veneered spandrels flanked by single cupboard on both ends, the horizontal backboards dovetailed to ends and through-tenoned by internal framing members, professionally conserved with restored finish, 180cm wide, 58cm deep, 116cm high (71 1/2in wide, 23in deep, 46 3/8in high). Footnotes: Provenance Purchased at auction in Baltimore, Maryland. Literature Several characteristics of the sideboard - including the choice selection of crotch mahogany veneers, outstanding quality of the carving, the application of arches and curves at corners, relief-carved pendant molding, and robust reeded, ring-turned, and tapered legs - are identified with the cabinetmaker Thomas Seymour (1771-1848) by Vernon C. Stoneman, John and Thomas Seymour: Cabinetmakers in Boston, 1794-1816 (Boston: Special Publications, 1959), p. 153-85. Examples of Seymour's sideboards in the Empire style, in which robust carved elements replace inlay as principal decoration, are illustrated in Robert D. Mussey, Jr., The Furniture Masterworks of John & Thomas Seymour (Salem: Peabody Essex Museum, 2003), cat. no. 47-8. Note An early Federal sideboard attributed to Thomas Seymour with nearly identical composition of a central arch and recessed tier is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts, acc. no. 2000.692; another from the collection of Stoneman and later of Dr. and Mrs. Francis D. Fowler, sold in Important American Furniture, Folk Art, and Decorative Arts, Auction 2584, Christie's, New York (24 September 2012), Lot 65.
