Pierre André Brouillet (French, 1857-1914) La cueillette signed and dated 'André Brouillet 1912' (lower right) oil on canvas 81.5 x 54.5cm (32 1/16 x 21 7/16in). Footnotes: Provenance With Richard Green, London, no. P358. Pierre André Brouillet, son of the sculptor Pierre-Amédée Brouillet, was educated in Poitiers before entering the École des Beaux-Arts in 1879 as a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme. He made his first entry into the Salon of 1879 and was working in the studio of Jean-Paul Laurens by 1880. Brouillet specialised in Orientalist painting, influenced by his master Jean-Léon Gérôme and his wife Emma Isaac, daughter of a Constantine Jewish merchant. Brouillet met his wife's family in Constantine, including her cousin Marie-Louise Travers and daughter Yvonne. The artist adopted the four years old girl when her mother died in December 1892. He returned to France with her the following year and raised her as his own daughter, using her as his model for several paintings. The present work is thought to be depicting Yvonne picking flowers.
