Mikhail Fedorovich Larionov (Russian/French, 1881-1964) Russian-Style wall mirror signed with Latin initials 'ML' (lower left) wood, metal, velvet, cabochons and a mirror 56 x 46cm (22 1/16 x 18 1/8in). Footnotes: Provenance Probably, a gift from Mikhail Larionov to Tamara Karsavina (1885-1978), married to the British diplomat and author Henry James Bruce (1880-1951). Nikita Bruce (1916-2002), married to Dorothy Mary Norah Mostyn Bell. Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 28 May 2012, lot 86. Acquired from the above by a private European collector. The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Dr Tatiana Zelyukina, dated 14/06/2023. At first glance, this mirror's design clearly references the theatrical sets created for early productions of the Ballets Russes, particularly echoing the visual language of The Firebird. This connection is far from superficial; it represents a crucial moment in performing arts history when dance, music, and visual design were being radically reimagined. Under the visionary direction of Sergei Diaghilev, the Ballets Russes had emerged as the most influential dance company of its time, challenging conventional artistic boundaries and fostering unprecedented collaboration between different art forms. The mirror's most striking feature is its incorporation of the peacock or firebird motif, a symbol deeply rooted in Slavic mythology. This fusion of mythological symbolism with modernist artistic expression exemplifies the period's broader cultural aims: to forge new artistic languages while maintaining connections to traditional narratives and symbols. Historical evidence suggests this mirror was created around 1919-1920, likely as a gift from Mikhail Larionov to ballerina Tamara Karsavina. This timing coincides with several significant events in Karsavina's life, including her marriage to Henry James Bruce and her triumphant return to the London stage in The Midnight Sun. The connection to Larionov is particularly significant, as he, along with Natalia Goncharova, had revolutionized theatrical design for the Ballets Russes. Larionov's previous exploration of the peacock theme, notably in his 1910 painting now housed in Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery, establishes a clear artistic lineage for the mirror's design elements.
