SPILBERGEN (JORIS VAN) Speculum orientalis occidentalisque Indiae navigationum, first edition in Latin, large allegorical title vignette, 25 engraved views, plans and maps (of which 3 double-page, 2 folding comprising World map [Shirley 304] and Indonesia), the world map with several old worm traces filled near central fold, one small infill in ink facsimile, a few single wormholes and light marginal damp-stains at lower; Indonesia with small worm trails and short tears repaired at fold; occasional single wormholes and light toning throughout, CONTEMPORARY VELLUM GILT WITH ARMS OF KING CHARLES I AS PRINCE OF WALES, covers panelled in gilt with outer border of double fillets, the inner border with stylised thistle-head at corner, the large central panel with blocked corner-pieces including a bleeding heart motif, enclosing the large arms of Charles, Prince of Wales, flat spine in compartments with single flowerhead divided by triple fillets, t.e.g., some light stains and rubbing, later ties and endpapers [Alden 619.133; Landwehr 362; Sabin 89450], oblong 4to (180 x 143mm.), Leiden, Jodocus Hondius for Nicolaus à Geelkerken, 1619 Footnotes: BOUND BETWEEN 1619 AND 1625, POSSIBLY FOR KING CHARLES I AS PRINCE OF WALES. A handsomely illustrated account, including a World map, of a voyage undertaken by Joris Van Spilbergen (1568-1620), a German in the service of the Dutch East India Company, in which he circumnavigated the world with a flotilla of six ships, 'the most successful Dutch circumnavigation to date. The fleet had kept together, there had been little loss of Dutch life, and the expedition had netted a considerable profit for its sponsors' (Howgego).
