John Bull: Two pearlware jugs, circa 1803-10 Decorated with satirical cartoons, one printed in brown and hand-coloured with 'Facing the Enemy' a pitying John Bull standing before an emaciated French soldier, the print signed 'Manufactured by T Harley Lane End', the reverse with a flower spray, painted borders around the neck, 14.3cm high, the second jug printed in black with 'John Bull Peppering Buonaparte', Napoleon humiliated by the English soldier, the reverse of the jug with a portrait of 'Admiral Lord Nelson, Born Sept 29th 1758 - Died Oct 21st 1805, Aged 47', painted blue rim, 13.6cm high (2) Footnotes: Thomas Harley of Lane End, Staffordshire was a potter and 'black printer' from circa 1801, adapting and adding his name to a number of prints relating to the Napoleonic wars. 'Facing the Enemy' was adapted from a cartoon drawn by George Woodward and engraved by Isaac Cruickshank. John Bull peppering Napoleon, seen on the second mentioned jug is also after an engraving by Cruickshank. The image appears on a red printed mug in the British Museum, inv. no. 1988,0502.1.
