Three creamware dinner plates from the 'Baltic Set Dinner Service', circa 1802 Enamelled with a border of oak leaves and acorns reserving panels inscribed 'Nelson', above blue banners inscribed 'the Glorious 1st of August' and 'the San Josef', the cavetto titled 'Aboukir' and '14th Feby', the centre with a fouled anchor, 'Nelson, 2nd April, Baltic', enclosed by a laurel wreath, 24.8cm diam (3) Footnotes: Provenance Probably Vice-Admiral Horatio, Lord Nelson Probably Emma, Lady Hamilton The 'Baltic Set' was listed in an inventory of circa 1813, consisting of items packed up at Merton, to be held as surety against loans given to Emma Hamilton. The Merton, or Trickey, inventory lists a 'Baltic Set' tea and dessert service, which were of London-decorated Paris porcelain. The dinner service listed is more numerous and was evidently of English creamware and included rare shapes such a cheese trays and many large oval serving dishes. Some 71 dinner plates were recorded in the inventory. The set celebrates the Battle of Copenhagen in April 1801, evidenced by the 'Baltic' decoration at the centre of each plate, but also references Nelson's other victories, namely the Battle of the Nile, 'Aboukir', and the Battle of Cape St Vincent, 'The San Josef', which was arguably the beginning of Nelson's stratospheric rise to fame. Thought to have been presented to Nelson in 1802 by the Ladies of the City of London, the 'Baltic Set' would have been commissioned and produced in some haste. During wartime porcelain blanks were hard to acquire and so creamware would have made a good alternative for the large dinner service required for banquets. Indeed, it is probable that Nelson was never aware that his Baltic tea and dessert services were comprised of hard-paste French porcelain, but the dinner service perhaps more appropriately of British earthenware.
