Admiral Lord Howe: Two South Staffordshire enamel patch boxes, circa 1800 Printed with 'The glorious Victory of Earl Howe, On the 1st of June 1794', around the naval battle of Ushant raging, the smaller example with a pale pink base, 4.2cm wide, the larger example also hand-coloured and painted with a blue and red border, the base in blue, 5cm wide, both with mirrors to the interior lids (2) Footnotes: The same printed outline has been used for both boxes. The larger box presumably would have cost more to buy at the time, being a little larger and with hand-painted detailing. The manufacturers of these fashionable boxes also adapted their printed designs to commemorate subsequent naval victories, staying current obviously being of commercial importance.
