Admiral Lord Rodney: a pearlware mug and a creamware mug, circa 1785 The first commemorating the Battle of the Saintes, applied with a medallion depicting a warship suspended from a ribbon which reads 'VILLA DE PARIS [sic]', classical women mourning by urns raised on plinths applied either side, on a rich brown ground, the turned rim and foot washed in green, 9.3cm high, the creamware example modelled to form the naval commander's head and shoulders, moulded around the rim with the inscription 'SUCCESS TO LORD RODNEY', the high handle with laurel leaf moulding, 12cm high Footnotes: French flagship the Ville de Paris was captured during the Battle of the Saintes in 1782, an important British victory during the American Revolutionary War. The losses to the French fleet were substantial and the Comte de Grasse became the first French Admiral in history to be captured by the enemy. Prattware or pearlware versions of the second mug were also made to commemorate and toast the long-serving Lord Rodney.
