TATTING, 'WOMAN'S WORK' - LADY HOARE AND THE QUEEN OF ROMANIA An archive of manuscripts, photographs, ephemera and original samples of tatting made or collected by Lady Katharin Hoare, partly relating to her book The Art of Tatting, and her friendship with Elisabeth, Queen of Romania, comprising: HOARE (KATHARIN L.) Hoare 1910', plates, one tissue guard loose, publisher's pictorial cloth gilt, 4to, Longmans, 1910 ALBUM compiled by Lady Hoare of materials relating to her tatting book, including: original manuscript of her introduction to The Art of Tatting, signed 'Carmen Sylva [her literary pseudonym], Feb. 1910', 16 leaves (verso only), purple ink, tied with blue silk ribbon upper left, 8vo, [1910]; approximately 12 gelatin silver print photographs of tatting samples used as plates in the book; 4 gelatin silver photographic portraits of the Queen of Roumania (one signed 'Elisabeth'); ephemera, including an invitation to an exhibition of Lady Hoare's tatting ('1 Lira, to be given to the Lembombo Mission'); a letter from the Queen on Castel Pelesch [Peles] headed paper (1912); numerous newspaper cuttings relating to the book and to the Queen; sheet music to 'On Bethlehem's Hill. Christmas Carol (No. XIII.)' with words by Lady Hoare and music by Joseph C. Bridges, and accompanying ALS from Bridges to Hoare about his composition ('I really think my music expresses the varied character of the words'); 2 long letters from Queen Mary's secretary expressing thanks for the gift of a copy of the book (which 'The Queen really loved... [she] would love to have a piece of you handiwork...'), 10pp., Buckingham Palace, July 21-25 1930; telegrams, miscellaneous letters and notes from the Queen, her ladies-in-waiting, H. Ling Roth, Gordon Craig, and others, some items pasted in, others loose in pockets inside covers, original cloth (to same design as the book itself), 4to, [c.1910, and later] ORIGINAL SAMPLE BOOK headed 'The Sampler Book of Tatting. Katharin L. Hoare 1907', 7 leaves of green watered silk over card, 92 tatting/lace samples mounted on 7 pages, 5 original watercolours (depicting a young woman, with baby, playing croquet, mountaineering, on beach, with a rose tree), and a poem ('My Mother Tats') mounted one per page on remaining sheets, the upper cover stitched with title inside a garland of roses and decorative outer border, silk ties with beaded ends, housed in green and pink silk bag with 4 tatting sample decorations on one side, flap and metal ornaments in corners, 4to (280 x 240mm.), [1907]; together with eight further sheets of red or white watered silk over card with approximately 140 varied tatting samples, presumably also by Lady Hoare, mostly in white thread, some in silver gilt, sheet size 280 x 225mm., [c.1910] ALPHABET. An alphabet tatted in orange and white, lacks Q,R,S,U, and V, each letter approximately 135mm. high, pinned one letter per sheet in contemporary cloth-backed album, folio, undated ALBUM with approximately 1,200 mounted tatting samples in various colours (some loose) together with several gelatin silver photographs of tatting samples, notes and cuttings, pink watered silk bag-type binding with handle, small 4to (210 x 185mm.), undated (collection) Footnotes: 'WOMAN'S WORK' - Lady Hoare's own copy of The Art of Tatting, with albums of original tatting samples, and materials relating to the making of the book, including the manuscript of the book's introduction written by its dedicatee Elisabeth, Queen of Romania (1846-1916). The Queen notes the book is not meant for the 'Amazons or the Beehives... [but] women who can afford to stay at home, to have ten or twelve children,... the dear solitary, lonely, worried, or content woman, who is not condemned to earn a hard bread with hard work'. Sadly Elisabeth, Queen to King Carol I, only had one child who died aged three, thereafter devoting her time to good causes and the arts, particularly the revival of Romanian folk-lore and traditions. Lady Hoare's work, alongside exposure in fashion magazines, was instrumental in a resurgence of interest in tatting in the early twentieth century.
