Jenkinson, from the author April 1874' on the front free endpaper, half-title, illustrated throughout, browning, contents loose in publisher's cloth-backed colour-printed boards, covers detached, stained and worn, 8vo, Robert John Bush, 1872 Footnotes: INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR to S.G. Jenkinson, the British collector of tax and administrator for the region, who hosted Lear during a stay at Hardwar, India from 3-6 April 1874. In his journal Lear recorded that he and his manservant Giorgio were 'received directly by Mr. Jenkinson in the kindest manner. His mother, as also Lord Northbrook's, was a sister of Sir George Grey... Mr. Jenkinson drove me in a dogcart to Hard-war, doubtless one of the most curious places in India'. Over the next few days he was able to follow Jenkinson 'judging a murder case, butchers of Jehallipur', and on 5 April recorded 'went to see Mr. Jenkinson (having last night written a letter to Mrs. Jenkinson 'with an order for two books of Nonsense and a Corsica, small return for so much kindness), but he, having risen, had gone to bed again...' (quoted in Edward Lear's Indian Journal, edited by Ray Murphy, 1953).
