For Patrick Oliver my friend. begetter in chief of these my first scratchings. Peter O'Toole', plates, publisher's cloth, dust-jacket, 8vo, Macmillan, [1992]; TWO AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED by O'Toole, one to Patrick Oliver ('Dear Patrick'), mentioning a recent trip to Nagasaki ('Naga fucking saki. No did I journey there on the Enola Gay, merry British Airways... it is as good a place as any to ponder on bombshells. Multiple Sclerosis...', and following a filthy suggestion on how to 'cop a squirt of Aids' that the two would together 'dither into decrepitude!', and a lengthy account of his recent visit (whilst on way to the cricket at Headingly) to his childhood neighbourhood of Hunslet in Leeds ('... My mean street, the Beulah pub, the chish and Fippy [sec]... had been transformed into a sports centre', and recalling their visit to the Adelphi pub as seventeen year olds to hear jazz for the first time, and updated him on the writing of his autobiography ['Loitering with Intent'] ('... I tumble out of the pit... bather and then go scibble scribble. We are in it, somewhere, you and I...', 6 pages, signed 'Ever Peter', 30 January 1992; the other letter to Oliver's wife Valerie ('Dearest V.'), thanking them for 'a wholly delightful Christmas', mentioning his son, that he has only lost at Scrabble four times, and noting that afterwards he 'fell over with a diseased kidney... you'd better send me details of that amazing wheeling animated wheelchair...', and giving an update on the second volume of his autobiography ('... there was copy editing and then editing and now by Christ, there's illustrations, the fucking cover, and then Macmillan will expect me to flog it'), 3 pages, signed 'Love P.' 26 January 1996, 4to, on paper headed '31 St. Gabriel's Road...', each in original envelope--OSBORNE (JOHN) Deja Vu. A Play, PETER O'TOOLE'S COPY OF THE TYPESCRIPT, SENT TO PATRICK OLIVER, with accompanying note from O'Toole ('Yes. Then read the bloody thing out loud. You will find it good and LONG XX O'Dear') loosely inserted, a few annotations (?in another hand) on the timing of each act, etc., wrappers ('P O'T' in ink and mug stain on upper cover, 4to, 1988; together with a programme and tickets to O'Toole's Macbeth at the Old Vic in 1980, a letter from O'Toole's secretary, notes and poems by Oliver, and 2 photographs of O'Toole, Oliver and the latter's family (small quantity) Footnotes: 'PATRICK, MY O'LIVER, MY FRIEND. DONT MIND ME, JUST RAVING IN INK' - The dedication copy, inscribed to O'Toole's lifelong friend Patrick Oliver ('O'Liver' as referred to in the book), with accompanying letters mentioning the book's genesis, their shared childhood in Leeds, love of Jazz, cricket and other edgy matters. Also included is the script of John Osborne's final play 'Deja Vu', in which O'Toole was to have acted before his fall out with the playwright, passing it to Oliver with a note 'You will find it good and LONG. O'Dear'. Provenance: Patrick Oliver (1933-2009), of whom O'Toole wrote 'No one, the good the bad or the loathsome mediocrities, has had on me a greater or more timely influence than O'Liver' (Loitering with Intent, 1992, p.79); by descent to the present owner.
