SUFFRAGE – 'MOTORING SCARF' Striped tri-coloured suffragette scarf with 'Votes for Women' printed at each end, cream Japanese silk, printed in purple and green, slight discolouration and marks, some fading particularly where folded, several small pin holes (possibly where pinned to a hat), width 330mm., length c.2120mm., c.1908 Footnotes: 'THE COLOURS, LIKE THE PRINCIPLES OF THE UNION, BEING FAST': A RARE SCARF SIMILAR TO THAT TAKEN TO THE DERBY BY SUFFRAGETTE MARTYR EMILY WILDING DAVISON. One of the earliest pieces of suffragette propaganda material and one of the scarcest at auction, the 'motoring scarf' was a popular seller due to its versatility. Contemporary photographs show it being worn over a hat to keep it in place whilst motoring (which may explain the small pin holes in our example), tied round the body as a makeshift sash, or simply as a scarf. Printed in purple (for dignity) and green (for hope) on a white background (for purity), these colours were introduced by the Women's Social and Political Union at the Hyde Park Rally of 21 June 1908. The mother of suffragette Mary Blathwayt from Bath recorded in her diary that Mary dressed '...in white muslin with the scarf crosswise over her shoulder' (Elizabeth Crawford, 'Suffragettes and their Dress', 2021, Woman and her Sphere website). Selling for 2s 11d, it was first advertised and marketed as a 'motoring scarf' in Votes for Women in June 1908: 'at each of the ends it bears the war cry in colours on a white ground. The beauty of the scarf is not its only merit for it washes, the colours, like the principles of the Union, being quite fast' (Museum of London website). By producing such items, the WSPU created a clear visual identity for the campaign through fashion. Women were encouraged by the WSPU to wear the colours of the cause throughout the day, not just for WSPU events, and the wearing of this scarf in public was therefore a bold and brave statement of intent. The ultimate example of this intent was demonstrated by Emily Wilding Davison who became a suffragette martyr in June 1913 after attempting to pin a similar scarf to the King's horse Amner at the Derby.
