Spielmann, Ladysmith Day, 1 March 1900' on the front free endpaper, half-title, 24 plates, contemporary blue crushed morocco gilt, by Zaehnsdorf (gilt stamp and date 1900 on inner dentelle), sides with ornate border including flowers and scrolls, spine to similar design in 6 compartments, g.e., gilt dentelles, watered silk endpapers, 8vo, Cassell, 1900 Footnotes: FINE ASSOCIATION COPY, inscribed to Joan Severn (née Agnew), 'whose name is so closely linked to the Professor as his most trusted friend and counsellor, and the cheerful companion and guardian of his age' (Spielmann). Spielmann devotes a chapter, 'The Angel in the House' to Severn who, from 1864 until Ruskin's death in 1900 (two months prior to the book's inscription), helped run his household first at Denmark Hill, then Brantwood. He wrote some 2000 letters to her, made her his 'adopted daughter' and together with her husband Arthur, her heir. Provenance: Joan Severn (née Agnew, 1846-1924), inscription from the author; Edgar Graham, caretaker of Brantwood c.1945-1965; by descent to the present owner.
