Thank You, Jeeves!, first American edition, INSCRIBED BY ARTHUR FOTHERINGHAM-LYSONS in pencil on front free endpaper ('Jeeves on the cover was from a drawing by James Montgomery Hagg. I posed for it') and signed by him below in ink, short tear to upper edge of a few pages, publisher's pictorial purple cloth with figure of Jeeves by Flagg in black, dust-jacket with full-length portrait of Jeeves by Flagg (worn with chips and tears at edges, affecting lettering on spine, front panel detached), [McIlvaine A51b.1.], Boston, Little Brown and Company, 1934; Nothing But Wodehouse. Edited by Ogden Nash, INSCRIBED TO FOTHERINGHAM-LYSONS BY JAMES MONTGOMERY FLAGG in ink on front free endpaper ('We had a lot of fun doing the pictures for Jeeves, what? James Montgomery Flagg'), 3 cuttings pasted to endpapers and half-title, publisher's orange cloth, very worn at edges, spine repaired with tape, front hinge split, New York, Garden City Publishing Company, 1932, 8vo (2) Footnotes: A pair of interesting association copies linking the artist and model for the depiction of Jeeves on the covers of American editions of the 1930s. The artist James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) was chosen to draw the figure of Jeeves for the dust-jackets and covers of Thank You, Jeeves! and subsequent American editions of the Jeeves and Wooster novels of the 1930s, having illustrated the figure for years in Collier's. At his peak, he was said to have been the highest-paid magazine illustrator in America, but he is probably best remembered for the political posters he designed during World War I, most notably the Uncle Sam 'I Want You' poster. In Gloucester Archives there is a 1932 letter from Flagg containing an illustration of Fotheringham-Lysons captioned 'Jeeves', and a 1934 note addressed to 'Jeeves', with an illustration of a butler holding a Christmas garland and a review of Fotheringham-Lysons's latest performance. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
