Dang Xuan Hoa (Vietnamese, born 1959) Untitled (Still Life) 1994 signed and dated HOA 2/94 (lower right) gouache on paper 42 x 54 cm (16 1/2 x 21 1/4 in) Footnotes: Provenance Important private collection, Singapore 鄧春和 無題(靜物) 水粉 紙本 1994年作 簽名:HOA 2/94(右下) 來源 重要新加坡私人收藏 Dang Xuan Hoa, born in 1959, has emerged as a prominent figure in the global art scene. His journey began at the Hanoi College of Fine Arts, where he honed his skills and developed a unique artistic voice. However, it was during the transformative era of the early 1990s that Hoa truly made his mark. The 'Gang of Five,' a group of artists including Dang Xuan Hoa, Hong Viet Dung, Ha Tri Hieu, Tran Luong, and Pham Quang Vinh, defied convention. Breaking away from the prevailing social realist style, they embarked on a daring exploration of new artistic directions. Abstraction, Symbolism, and Post-Impressionism became their tools to express personal emotions, experiences and perspectives. Hoa's paintings resonate with simplicity, harmony and raw emotion. Inspired by folk art and Post-Impressionist masters, he weaves intimate narratives into his canvases. His self-portraits capture fleeting moments—whether it's the glint in his eye or the curve of his smile. But Hoa's art extends beyond the self; it embraces family, friends, pets and daily life. Every stroke of his brush exudes warm familiarity, inviting viewers into his world. Symbolism plays a pivotal role in Hoa's work. Ceramic vases, flowers, oil lamps, fruit bowls and cats populate his compositions. These objects go beyond mere decoration; they symbolise his worldview, culture, identity and memories. Through them, Hoa invites us to explore our own connections to the everyday. His mastery of colour and composition is evident. Fine contours are reminiscent of collages or woodcuts, while vibrant hues echo the post-impressionist palette. Hoa doesn't seek to replicate reality; instead, he delves beneath its surface. His paintings become portals, revealing hidden layers of meaning - the joy of existence, the pain of longing, the search for meaning. Dang Xuan Hoa's journey—from the Gang of Five to global recognition—embodies the essence of contemporary Vietnamese art. His canvases come alive, inviting us to see beyond the brushstrokes and into the soul of an artist who paints not just with pigment, but with passion.
