CONSTANCE WHITNEY WARREN (American, 1888-1948) Josephine titled, dated, signed, and numbered ''Josephine' 1922. C.W. Warren. 3 [ with a double underline]' (in the bronze); Claude Valsuani foundry mark (in the bronze beneath the signature) bronze with dark brown patina, on an oval marble plinth height 4 in (10.2 cm)., (without plinth) Footnotes: N.B. Constance Whitney Warren was born into a wealthy philanthropic family with homes in New York City and in Newport, Rhode Island. From her youth, Warren was an avid sportswoman. In 1912 she married the Frenchman Guy de Lasteyrie, a direct descendent of the Marquis de La Fayette, and after an extended trip through the western United States, the couple settled in Paris. There Warren studied with Pierre Louis Peyranne and developed a successful, although brief, 11-year career as a sculptor in bronze. Her preferred subjects were western, particularly the traditionally clad cowboy on a bucking horse. Two of her life-sized bronzes on this theme stand before the state capitols of Texas and Oklahoma. Warren also created a number of small animal bronzes, often featuring horses. The dog depicted in this bronze, Josephine, is believed to be the German Shepherd that was the artist's companion in Paris. In an article on Warren for The Gilcrease Museum, Dr. Scott A. Sullivan of Texas Christian University cites two different depictions of the dog, Josephine No. 1 from 1922 and Josephine No. 2 from 1923. The work at hand, titled in the bronze Josephine No. 3 appears very akin to Josephine No. 1, as it is illustrated in Dr. Sullivan's article. This information is adapted from Scott A. Sullivan's publication, 'Constance Whitney Warren, Sculptor in a Man's World,' from The Journal of the Gilcrease Museum Vol. 22 (Winter, 2015), pp. 18-37, 2015. https://repository.tcu.edu/bitstream/handle/116099117/11689/Constance%20Whitney%20WarrenSculptor%20in%20a%20Man%27s%20World-Scott%20A%20%20Sullivan.pdf?sequence%3D1 For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
