LAURA WHEELER WARING (American, 1877-1948) Yellow Lilies in a Pewter Pitcher signed 'L.W. WARING' (lower right) watercolor on paper 24 x 19 3/4 in (61.2 x 50.2 cm).framed 25 1/8 x 21 1/4 in (64.0 x 53.8 cm). Footnotes: N.B. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Laura Wheeler Waring was one of the most well-known artists of the Harlem Renaissance. Waring studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where in 1914 she received the William E. Cresson Memorial Scholarship to study at the Louvre. She was the first African American woman to be awarded the scholarship. She returned to the United States during the First World War, but would come back to France afterward, becoming one of the very few African American artists working in France at the time. She painted and drew prolifically while abroad, but the locations of most of the works she created overseas are now unknown. Most recently, nine of Waring's works were included in the exhibition The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (February 25 - July 28, 2024). The present work is characteristic of Waring's later style. While she became most famous for her landscapes and portraits, Waring's still lifes display the same gentle treatment of light, vivid use of color, and balanced composition evident throughout her oeuvre.
