Footnotes: N.B. Born in Cincinnati in 1869, Charles Allan Winter studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy under Thomas Noble. He later studied in Europe and exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1896 and 1898. Winter met his wife, Alice Beach Winter, while teaching at the St. Louis School of Fine Art. Both became important figures in the Cape Ann, Massachusetts, art colony. They eventually settled in Gloucester in 1931 where they hosted many prominent artists of the time, including John Sloan, Agnes Richmond, Stuart Davis, and Paul Cornoyer.
