The Clash A large poster for all of the band's appearances at the Bond International Casino, NYC, May-June 1981 from the original batch printed 145 x 109cm (57 x 43in). Footnotes: Bernard Rhodes: 'Much of what we take for granted historically was created during an extremely short period. This poster celebrates the cultural happening I devised for The Clash, summer 1981, at Bond's Times Sq. (Which enthralled the whole of New York City & its outer boroughs through wide scale coverage on the news channels.) It was the first occasion where a large group of outer city/suburban American white kids experienced radically different lifestyles to what they were familiar with. The Clash, intellectually & emotionally, conveyed through their terrific live performances the world of a British white underclass (not at that time highlighted in traditional American neighbourhoods.) And Afro-American & West Indian values were dynamically delivered by Grand Master Flash, Lee Perry & other deep-rooted artists. These underground genres of Punk, Hip-Hop & Reggae soon became widely sought after. The addition of emergent street artists such as Futura 2000, interacting Graffiti Art with musicians, was another Rhodes/Clash cultural adventure for everyone at this remarkable event to enjoy. Even Frank Sinatra wanted to check it out...' Provenance: From the personal archive of Bernard Rhodes, designer, studio owner, record producer, songwriter and co-creator of The Clash.
