A CASED AND ENGRAVED MANHATTAN NAVY MODEL SERIES IV REVOLVER, Newark, New Jersey, 1864-67. Serial number 47387, .36 caliber, barrel and frame with foliate scroll engraving; octagonal barrel marked on the top 'MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. NEWARK N.J./PATENTED MARCH 8, 1864' with German silver front sight and loading lever below; five-shot roller engraved cylinder with five scenes marked 'PATENT DEC 27. 1859'; steel frame, with silvered brass trigger guard and grip strap; walnut grip, all visible serial numbers match including the wedge; walnut case opening to a compartmented and green velvet lined interior with an embossed copper powder flask, steel Manhattan Fire Arms ball/bullet mold, and a box of six Combustible Envelope cartridges. Barrel lg. 6 1/2, overall lg. 11 3/4 in. Condition: Barrel mostly toned to mottled gray with bluing remaining at the muzzle, cylinder bluing is approx. 60%, frame is toned to gray, trigger guard and grip strap silvering is approx. 80%, grip has minor blemishes; case is good, accessories are good. Footnotes: Literature This revolver is illustrated and described in Waldo E. Nutter, Manhattan Firearms, (Harrisburg: Stackpole Co., 1958), p. 161, plate 49, fig. 2 and p. 163.
