A CRIMEAN WAR PRESENTATION DAGGER, Swindon Works, Wiltshire, England, c. 1855. The hilt with brass counter-guard and pommel and faceted hardwood grip; double-edge blade with prominent median ridge on both sides; brass scabbard with shield tip engraved on one side 'For the/Rev. G. Campbell/to use at the/Crimea/Jany/1855' and on the other side 'Made/at Swindon/Works.' Blade lg. 12 1/2, overall lg. 18 in. Condition: Very good overall condition hilt brass toned to yellow, grip has minor dings and dents, blade is bright with scattered light gray toning, blade edge has a few shallow nicks; scabbard toned to mottled yellow. Footnotes: Note Swindon Works was the principal maintenance center for England's Great Western Railway. The center opened in 1843 for the purpose of repairing, maintaining and constructing locomotives. This dagger was likely produced by a skilled workman at the works in down or spare time.
