A PAIR OF AMERICAN PERCUSSION POCKET PISTOLS, mid-19th century. 5 in., .48 caliber rifled octagonal Damascus barrels engraved 'LONDON' on the top; lock plates with leafy engraving and marked 'VAN WART/SON & Co'; walnut stocks with checkered grips; engraved German silver trigger guard, nose cap, entry pipe and hinged compartment in the butt; wood rammers. Overall lg. 8 3/4 in. Condition: Steel toned to mottled dark gray, Damascus texturing is visible, stocks have scattered dings and dents, furniture shows minor wear, rammers are later replacements, actions function properly. Footnotes: Note Henry Van Wart Son & Co. was a supplier of Birmingham-made gun parts to American and West Indies merchants, 1835-83. Guns are usually marked London, (Howard L. Blackmore, Gunmakers of London 1350-1850, (York, PA: George Shumway Publisher, 1986), p. 194.)
