A collection of three early 18th century coffee grinders Each of turned form with various sections joined by screw thread, with internal metal grinding gears, the largest example 26cm high, the smallest 21cm high (3) Footnotes: A similar example sold Sotheby's 30th November to 1st December 1983The W.J Shepherd Collection of Treen Lot 646. Coffee was introduced to England in the mid 17th century. The first coffeehouse was opened in Oxford in 1650 and eventually more were opened all throughout London. Originally the beans were broken down using a pestle and mortar -a laborious and time consuming method. Thus the 'mill' was invented -there is a reference written by Thomas Garraway of a 'Nicholas Brook..is the only known man for making of Mils for grinding of coffee powder, which Mills are by him sold from 40 to 45 shillings the Mill.' Until recently, examples from the 18th century could be found quite easily with their mechanism intact. In the 19th century there was a fashion to remove the mechanism and convert them into table lamps -thus pieces with their complete mechanism are now collectors pieces. For further reading see E.H Pinto, Treen and other Wooden Bygones 1979, Bell & Hyman, London, p 145.
