His 2009 work The Birth of Venus was created in rural Hawaii, where he established his home base and studio in 2006 after stepping away from fashion and celebrity photography. Here, he pays homage to Sandro Botticelli's Renaissance masterpiece The Birth of Venus, now in the collection of the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. LaChapelle's composition retains the central female figure as she emerges from the sea, but now Venus arrives in a dayglow world festooned with ribbons, glitter, and gold. Over the past three decades, LaChapelle has been exhibited around the globe at museums including the U.S. National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.; Victoria & Albert Museum in London; and the Musee D'Orsay in Paris.
